9 Facts about Cambodia

  • Is Angkor Wat amazing? Absolutely! But if you aren’t a history freak, 1 day pass is more than adequate (*purchase one day before, make it for the sunset right away, then you may still able to fully utilized the ticket on the next day!) What I suggest is, spare a whole day for Angkor Wat tour, and pick a few spots to go. As if you don’t plan to study much about the place like me, you will most likely feel all of them look identical. You still will feel WOW at the first sight, but then the more you go, the more confuse you are :p ohya, remember to dress appropriately. Shorts and skirts above knees, sleeveless top are not allowed in Angkor Wat.
  • The sunrise I enjoyed the most: at Angkor Wat
  • The sunset I enjoyed the most: at the countryside (riding ATV along the countryside is a must try if you are looking for something adventurous and different from the Angkor Wat tour; you will be taught on how to ride ATV and there will be guide with you throughout the journey, it cost USD30 per pax)
  • Sand and dust’s everywhere, equip yourself with face mask and shades if you ride tuk tuk all the time like we did. Oh ya, you might need a jacket too if you are traveling by tuk tuk in night/ early morning to resist the cold wind
Left: correct attire ; Right: wrong example and prepare to eat dust all along the way
Overloaded tuktuk – 5 persons with lugguage
  • Eat street food: stroll along their market, eat like a local!
  • Angelina Jolie’s: You might have heard a lot about this famous drink in The Red Piano, Siem Reap.To me it’s good to try once, after all it’s expensive and just an alcoholic lemon water, nothing special.
  • We spent a night in the bus with bundle bed that bring us from Siem Reap to Phom Penh. The trip takes between 5 and 6 hours; it’s quite an interesting experience. (*There are a few bus companies that you can choose from. We chose Giant Ibis. It’s quite comfortable with basic amenities like blanket, pillow, a bottle of drinking water, WIFI and socket.)
  • The best way to bargain: turn around and walk away
  • You probably want to know more about the darkest times in Cambodia by visiting killing field museum and prison S21 in Phnom Penh. It’s really grieving and heart breaking by witnessing those scenes. So, be mentally prepared for that.
